Tornio in the midnight sun
n Tornio
Acerbi finds accommodation in a good inn kept by a polite and helpful
man. Acerbi socialises with every person who shows any inclination to
sociability in the town and he is met with friendliness on all fronts.
On their walks Acerbi's party has the opportunity to admire the views
north of the island Suensaari. The expedition also gets acquainted with
the scenery opening towards the north from the belfry of Alatornio church.
The picturesque midnight sun fascinates Acerbi as much as it has fascinated
many other travellers in the earlier decades.
In Tornio the expedition is joined by doctor Deutsch, an eager natural
scientist. Jöns Svanberg, secretary of the science academy, also
wants to join the expedition. Svanberg is making preparations for adjustment
measurements of the measurements carried out by de Maupertuis in 1736-1737.
The ship transporting the quadrants and other equipment Svanberg needs
is late, however, so he stays in Tornio to wait for his equipment.
