Nivavaara

De Maupertuis had had reached the Nivavaara fell before the party from the Kaakamavaara fell. A shortcut was found that made the fell top easily accessible. As it was Sunday, local people came to the Nivavaara fell, to watch the peculiar party. On the fell the expedition party also saw two Lapp girls herding reindeer. From the Nivavaara top the belfry of the Tornio Church and Kaakamavaara, Horilankero, Aavasaksa and Huitaperi fells could all be seen.

Nivavaara - 7th July 1736:
That in which I was upon Nieva being exactly shut, I could scarcely support the heat it occasioned. On Monday, the ninth, I caused the soldiers to bring firs, which they hewed on the side of the mountain: I inclined them against a rock, which was perpendicular, and about nine or ten feet high, At the bottom of which was a large rock, very even and horizontal, which served me for floor and bed in the chamber which I made with these trees. (Outhier, Journal of a voyage to the north 1736-1737, p. 278)
