Anders CelsiusAnders Celsius was born in Uppsala on the 27th of November in 1701 and died there on the 25th of April in 1744. He was an astronomer and became professor at Uppsala University in 1730. He published widely, among others Observations on the Northern Lights in Sweden in 1733. Anders Celsius principally gained his reputation by introducing a thermometer of 100 degrees. The visit Anders Celsius paid to Paris while the expedition was being planned influenced the decision to head the expedition to the Tornionlaakso Valley. Celsius participation in the expedition brought along the support of the King of Sweden that materialised i.e. in the availability of soldiers for practical assistance in different stages of the expedition. Experienced in making observations and specialised in astronomy Celsius was of great help in observations and calculations. |
