At The Rovaniemi Market
The film Rovaniemen markkinoilla [At the Rovaniemi Market] (1951) could be regarded as a kind of milestone in the Finnish entertainment culture. The theme of the movie distilled the revue tradition which came to life in the post-war entertainment field and which attempted to lighten the harsh and sober reality of everyday life. There was a desire to offer a moment of joy and diversion in the midst of reconstruction for a nation exhausted by hard work and the heavy war years. An entire rillumarei revue culture was born, founded on the chorus of the movie’s theme song.
The man behind the film was lyricist, revue singer and actor Reino Helismaa, who wrote the script and the movie’s songs as well as performing in the same. The motion picture was directed by Jorma Nortimo.
