Rovaniemi has received its Finnish name in accordance with its location. It is surrounded by many cairns, rocky ascents and hills, rova meaning hill. Vaara also means hill – and the town is encircled by Korkalonvaara, Olleronvaara, Pöyliövaara, Lapinvaara, Syvävaara, Piiritänvaara and Ounasvaara – ”a new mountain of the Midnight Sun next to old, distinguished Aavasaksa” as explorer Samuli Paulaharju wrote in 1913. The earliest mention of Rovaniemi has been found in a note of purchase from 1453.

In an official guide to Rovaniemi which appeared at the outset of the 1960s, there is mention of Ounasvaara Hill’s two special sights: the midnight sun and a ski lodge open to visitors all year round. If Ounasvaara has its time of long, delightful light, it also has its counterpart of long wintry night. The Ounasvaara Ski Club arranged its first winter games in 1927, collecting an audience that was one hundred strong. Downhill skiing founds its way to Ounasvaara Hill in 1943 with the light infantrymen of the German and Austrian Alps having cleared the first slalom slope on the hill for Ounasvaara’s winter sport event. A ski jump was built initially on Pöyliövaara Hill in 1937, and after it was destroyed in 1944, a new home for flying Finns (and others) was built on Ounasvaara in 1947. A peak audience for the winter games gathered to follow ski champion Eero Mäntyranta’s successes in 1964. The total number of spectators was 32,000.Ounasvaara and the Ounasvaara Ski Club represent success stories in the tourism of Lapland and Rovaniemi. Competitive sporting events continue on Ounasvaara Hill, and it is also an outdoor recreation area popular amongst the townspeople themselves as well as a site for picking mushrooms and berries, not to mention a favourite tourist destination.
