ARCHITECTURE ELSEWHERE IN LAPLAND

Atrin maja

The first work Aalto did for Lapland was the renovation of the Kemijärvi church in 1929. The church was later burnt down during the war in 1944. The civil guard building for Kemi included some interesting architectural themes but the plan was never carried forward.

The most Northern works of Alvar Aalto were built during the war in Sirkka, Kittilä. They are Karelian style log buildings. Aalto made also a vast regional plan for Lapland and also some smaller plans which have been fairly unknown until these days.
